Fillmore’s Nomination of James S. Calhoun as 1st Governor of NM Territory

Congress created the Territory of New Mexico – which included present-day Arizona – on September 9, 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850. On December 23, 1850 President Millard Fillmore nominated James S. Calhoun to be the new territory’s first Governor.
