The Lands of Netherwood Park: Pioneering Development of the East Mesa Around UNM & the People Who Made It Happen
“The Lands of Netherwood Park is a history of land ownership and subdivision development of 368 acres north and northeast of the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque that arose from the bold actions of four remarkable women. They were all experienced educators who came from the Midwest to the Territory of New Mexico in the 1880s to teach and purchased land from the U.S. Government under a federal program to settle the western territories with the foresight to envision Albuquerque’s growth. Several of the women were faculty members at the University when it opened its doors in 1892. The story features early subdivision platting and the discovery of subsurface water during the period 1910-1920; annexation of the lands by the City of Albuquerque in 1950; and the subsequent subdivision development during the post-WW II population boom of the early 1950s through the 1960s. This is their story and the accomplishments that endure to this day.” – excerpt from the Netherwood Park Historical Society website.
