My Life in NM Education, Business & Politics presented by Dr. Lenton Malry

Book Cover of "Let's Roll This Train: My Life in New Mexico Education, Business, and Politics" by Dr. Lenton MalryOn October 16, 2016 at 2:00 pm, come learn about Dr. Lenton Malry’s journey from segregated Louisiana to becoming New Mexico’s first African American member of the State Legislature and the first African American elected to the Bernalillo County Commission. The program includes book signing of Malry’s memoirs “Let’s Roll this Train”.

The program will be held at the Albuquerque Museum in Old Town. Parking is free in the lot south of the Museum. Admission to the Museum and the AHS program is also free.

Lenton Malry served as New Mexico’s first African American state representative from 1968 to 1978 and Bernalillo County’s first African American Commissioner, serving as commission chairman in 1983-1984 and 1987-1988. He was also the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in education from the University of New Mexico. He taught on the Navajo Reservation and was Albuquerque Public Schools’ first African American principal. He retired from APS in 1987. Malry has served our community on a number of boards and commissions including, as a past-president of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and on the boards of the United Way, the UNM Cancer Center, Heights Psychiatric Hospital and the Albuquerque Air Quality Board. Malry has been married to his wife Joy for 56 years and they have a son Lenton Jr.
